< Buckeye Hills Hires New Grants Writer

   A grants writer has been hired by Buckeye
Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District.
Brent Smith, a Noble County resident and former employee of Buckeye Hills, was hired to seek grants for Monroe County as a part of the Economic Development program recently contracted by Buckeye Hills.
Boyer Simcox, executive director of the development district, and Misty Casto, assistant executive director/development director for the district, said the contract had been signed.
Smith will initially be at the Black Walnut Center in Monroe County Commerce Park intermittently. Later, he will be there on a full-time basis.
According to Buckeye Hills officials, the position for economic developer is being re-advertised on a wider scope. The deadline for submission of applications is Nov. 10.

While making plans to voice your opinion at the polls
... don't forget to take a form of identification along. Identification can be a drivers' license or the last four numbers of your social security number. A utility bill or bank statement with your name and address on it will also be accepted.
According to the election board, individuals can vote without the identification but are  required to deliver the proper identification information to the Board of Elections at the courthouse within 10 days in order to have the vote count. Don't forget-without proper ID, your voice will be silent.

< Warm the Children Benefit Raises $3,400

Monroe county residents supported a great cause October 27 when they turned out in the cold wind and rain to support Warm the Children, a charity focused on providing winter coats and boots to children of needy families. Kirt Sloan, manager, Woodsfield Riesbeck's Market, is shown here with his grill crew. The team started their day at 4 a.m. and grilled until 6:15 p.m.-long past the publicized 5 p.m. time. Riesbeck's grill team helped raise $3,400 for the Warm the Children program. Kirt and his crew raised $3,000 for the program last year.                      

< Pilots Approach Officials About County Airport Operations

A dozen individuals attended the Oct. 30 meeting of county commissioners to air concerns regarding the way the county airport is being managed. Most of those attending are pilots, and each submitted a letter. Nine letter were submitted and at least two others
were not available.
The users of the airport are in favor of dismissing David Board  as manager and replacing him with John Fogle, who operates his business, J&S Flying Ser-vices, from the airport. They also suggested that Don Pollock be returned to the airport authority. Gary Cook wrote, "As a pilot and hanger tenant of the airport for over 20 years, I am also a concerned citizen with the state of affairs at the airport. The current airport manager has caused such discontent for pilots and visitors that no one is using this great facility."
Cook told officials that pilots have grave concerns about what's going on at the airport. He  said Board is unreachable when needed, such as when pilots need fuel. According to Cook, who was spokesman for the group, Fogle has done most of what the manager is supposed to do. He said Fogle is willing to take over the duties without pay, which is $600 a month plus a residence.

< Monroe Central Drama Club to Perform Students Host Afternoon of One Acts

Performances will be held at Woodsfield High School on Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m.; Tickets are available at the door.

During an Afternoon of One Acts sponsored by the Monroe Central High School Drama Club, audiences will enjoy three one-act plays directed by students. Excerpts to include An Angel in the Clearing directed by Jordan Bach and Douglas Russell and written by Stuart De Luca; War Letters directed by Michael Paulus and written by J. Robert Wilkins and Cirrius, Nebraska directed by Drama Club Advisors and written by Nick Vigorito, Jr.
In their third autumn performance season the selected one act plays will be completely produced, directed and performed by students at Monroe Central High School.
Students of the choir will perform a variety of musical selections including songs to honor America's veterans. The event will also feature a dance performance by Laura Stimpert, a senior at Monroe Central; she will perform during intermission between the one
act plays.
Performances will be held at Woodsfield High School on Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m.; Tickets are available at the door.

<Margaret Bauer, 87, 211 South Sycamore St., Woodsfield, died Oct. 27, 2006, at her  home. She was born near Woodsfield, on Oct. 4, 1919, a daughter of the late Christian and  Mae Elizabeth Hoskinson Resecker.

< Harold J. Landefeld, 80, Miltonsburg Community, Woodsfield, died Oct. 23, 2006, at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Monroe County, a son of the late Herman J. Landefeld and Freda Reich Landefeld.

< Mark D. Weckbacher, 75, Marietta, died Oct. 28, 2006, at Riverside Methodist Hospital,  Columbus. He was born April 16, 1931, in Pleasant Ridge, a son of the late Roscoe Weckbacher and Daisy Anderson Weckbacher.

< Robert D. Lumbatis, 82, Urbana, formerly of Millerstown, died Oct. 30, 2006, in McAuley Center. He was born in Lewisville, on June 1, 1924, the son of the late George and Ollie Pearl Feiock Lumbatis. He was a 1942 graduate of Lewisville High School, Lewisville and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Paris. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II then transferred to the Air Force from which he retired. He also retired in 1984 from Siemen's of Urbana.
