~ Beacon Travels West ~
Allen and Brenda Lloyd of Clarington have returned
from a vacation in the western United States. They
visited Glacier, Yellowstone and Teton National Parks.
This picture was taken on July 18 in front of one of
the Glacier National Park's touring coaches, also
known as "jammers," referring to earlier days when
they had standard transmissions and the drivers could
be heard "jamming" the gears on the steep mountain
roads. Thirty-two of the original cars have been
restored and now run on propane. Parked at the train
station awaiting the arrival of visitors or emerging
from a tunnel on the "Going to the Sun" highway, the
red vehicles are a park attraction as well as a means
of transportation for park visitors. They are 25 feet
long and have a unique canvas top that rolls back to
allow a spectacular view of the park's beautiful
scenery.
