Winter's Just a Wind Away...Support Warm the Children
I saw a caterpillar whose fur was all black the other day. Someone said that predicts we
will have a harsh winter.
When I referred to the Farmer's Almanac, it seems to concur.
Taken from farmersalmanac.com... "Our winter predictions are pointing towards
widespread cold from coast to coast. The cold may not be as frigid as 30 or 40 years ago,
but we do expect this to be the coldest winter we've seen for quite a few years.  And, after
last year's unusual warmth, this chill might make winter harder than usual."
With thoughts of old-man winter top-of-mind, add to your mental checklist, "Support
Warm the Children."
The local program sponsored by the Beacon and generously supported by individuals
as well as folks like Riesbeck's and the Woodsfield Kiwanis, benefits students in the
Switzerland of Ohio Local School District in need of warm, winter gear.
Now, in its eighth year, area children benefit from your generosity. And, this year, the
need to serve local children through the program will be ever-so important as our county
continues to top the state's unemployment list.
All donations are spent on new warm winter coats and shoes for children of needy
families. All purchases are made in Monroe County. All advertising is paid by Monroe
County Beacon. No administration fees are taken from donations-100 percent is used to
purchase winter wear for children from birth to senior in high school.
Help our youngsters prepare for the cold winter ahead; mail your donations to: Warm

You can also show your support at the annual barbecue hosted at Riesbeck's Friday,

< Boots, blankets, mittens and mufflers

Boots, blankets, mittens and mufflers were not items one would normally think about
during a weekend such as the one just past. Beautiful! At least it was in my neck of the
woods.
However nice, though, I did think about the coming winter weather. Yes, of course
there's a good reason for my mind wandering in that direction - the Warm the Children
program.
Old Jack Frost will be nipping at the nose and chomping at  the toes in no time at all. 
It's the goal of Warm the Children to make sure the children of the Switzerland of Ohio
School District have the boots, shoes and coats necessary to ward off the challenges of
Jack's nipping and chomping. To do that, we ask that our readers get involved by sending
donations to purchase the winter coats and boots.
Warm the Children is the brain child of Mack Stewart, a former newspaper publisher
whose desire was to help the children of needy families. Mack is a resident of Connecticut
and knows the consequences of a harsh winter. Our winters may not be quite the same as
Connecticut's but cold is cold! Mack's Warm the Children program has spread to many
states and is administered by hundreds, maybe thousands, of newspapers. The desired
result is keeping kids warm. The Beacon, partnered with the Kiwanis Club, has the same
desire, to keep kids warm.

< Riesbeck's Prepares for BBQ

Kirt Sloan, manager of the Woodsfield Riesbeck's store, and his crew are preparing for the annual "Warm the Children" barbecue set for Friday, Oct. 27, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Riesbeck's parking lot. The grills will be hot and ready for the ribeye steaks, sausage, green peppers and onions. The soup beans will be cooking in the open kettles and the Riesbeck's bakery will have fresh cornbread prepared.
Ruritan members will be on hand making apple butter which will also be for sale.
Why all the extra work? It's to raise money for the needy children of the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District.  All the proceeds go to Warm the Children, a Monroe County Beacon and Woodsfield Kiwanis-sponsored program which provides new, warm, winter clothing to
needy children of this school district.
Sloan and approximately 15 store employees work tirelessly preparing for this annual fundraiser. Last year they donated $3,300 to Warm the Children. "This year, our goal is $4,000," said the store manager.
Over the last six years, Riesbeck's has donated over $8,000 to Warm the Children program!
The food is always wonderful and available at a great price. A steak sandwich, chips and soda is only $5; sausage, chips and soda, $4 and soup beans and cornbread, $3. Where else can you get such a bargain and help children, too?
According to Sloan, about 400-500 pounds of meat is cut for the event. Caito Food Distributors donate the produce; Conn's Potato Chips donate the chips each year and Superior Meats supply the ham used in the soup beans. The employees at Woodsfield's Subway cut the peppers and onions and the beverages are usually donated by a Riesbeck's distributor.
"We appreciate all the work Kirt and his employees do to raise this tremendous amount of money for the Warm the Children project," said Beacon publisher Arlean Selvy. "With their donation, the program can serve many more needy children of the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District."
